Khalwale defends attack on Wetang’ula in Senate showdown
By Mabonga Makhanu, August 6, 2025Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, presented evidence in support of remarks he made against National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, whom he accused of acting as an agent of President William Ruto instead of adhering to the constitutional mandate of his office.
Deputy Speaker Kathure Murungi directed Senator Khalwale to substantiate his claims, citing Standing Order 105(2), following a point of order raised by Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli, who had deemed Khalwale disorderly, over his remarks on the national assembly speaker.
The Deputy Speaker informed the House that failure to substantiate would render Senator Khalwale disorderly as per Standing Order 121.

According to the speaker, in the absence of adequate substantiation, the senator would be required to withdraw the statement and issue an apology to the Senate.
In response to the directive, Senator Khalwale informed the Senate that he was ready to substantiate his remarks, stating that the issue was serious since it did not concern a fellow senator but rather the Speaker of the National Assembly.
He added that the matter touched on Chapter Six of the Constitution and the Leadership and Integrity Act, something he had accused Wetangula of.
“It’s a matter that touched on Chapter 6 of the Constitution and the Ethics and Integrity Act, and for this reason, I would like the House to allow me, having gathered evidence from Transzoia, Kisumu, Kakamega, Busia, Lamu and Kirinyaga, to invite the ICT department to play out this evidence, (saying while removing a flash disc from his pocket) so that I am believed not to be on a game of witch-hunting. With your permission, I want you to allow the ICT to play the substantiation,” Khwalwale said
The evidence
To aid in his substantiation, he requested the House to allow him to present video evidence he had gathered from various counties, including Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Kakamega, Busia, Lamu, and Kirinyaga.
While retrieving a flash drive from his pocket, he requested the ICT department to play the content to support his claims and demonstrate that his actions were not part of a witch-hunt.

The Speaker, in turn, directed the Secretariat to first review the content of the flash drive, stating that he was not aware of its contents, before the videos could be played to the Senate.
His earlier claims
Senator of Kakamega Bony Khalwale accused Moses Wetang’ula of a lack of neutrality by acting as an agent of the United Democratic Alliance.
While speaking during a Senate proceeding on Tuesday, 5 July 2025, Khalwale told the Speaker of the National Assembly to stop taking sides.
“Instead of observing Article 1, the speaker of the National Assembly is participating in the so-called empowerment functions, where they dish out money. Wetang’ula is behaving like an agent of the United Democratic Alliance. Tomorrow I will come with evidence,” he said.
