Kenyans should have listened to Uhuru’s warning about Ruto – Njeri Kahiga

National Youth Leader Njeri Kahiga has lauded retired President Uhuru Kenyatta for what she termed as not engaging in political mudslinging moments before leaving office in 2022.

Speaking during a live TV interview on Friday, September 12, 2025, Kahiga stated that had Kenyans listened to the former president’s advice, they would not have voted for his successor, William Ruto.

According to Kahiga, Uhuru only issued a veiled warning to Kenyans about the political choices they were to take.

“Uhuru was a statesman and never wanted to engage in the prevailing political madness and mudslinging. He used to speak in proverbs and never went bare-knuckled in politics before leaving power,” she stated.

“If he had told us things the way they were in black and white, Kenyans would not have voted for the current president en masse,” she stated.

While commenting on the state of politics in the country, Njeri also challenged the new crop of Jubilee party officials to take a firm stand on where they stand politically.

Wanjigi sentiments

Her remarks come after Safina party leader Jimi Wanjigi challenged the William Ruto-led administration to borrow a leaf from the past regime on its approach to the affordable housing plans.

Speaking to a local radio station on Monday, August 18, 2025, Wanjigi trashed the Affordable housing program, accusing the government of doing business with Kenyans instead of serving them.

Wanjigi contrasted Ruto’s strategy with former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s model, saying Kenyatta at least leveraged private partnerships when rolling out housing projects.

“When Uhuru was doing it, Uhuru was building on public land and got private entities to build it. In Ruto’s time, this is public money.

Why doesn’t he learn and do the right thing?” he posed.

Call for a shift

The outspoken businessman emphasised that while affordable housing remains a noble idea, the framework must be fair, sustainable, and beneficial to citizens rather than enriching select individuals.

He said Ruto should revisit the policy and adopt a model that shields taxpayers from being shortchanged.
