People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has officially declared her candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, pledging to serve only one term if elected.

Addressing delegates at the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) National Delegates Conference at Ufungamano House, Karua said her administration would focus on laying a strong foundation for Kenya’s future.

“I believe that in five years, it is possible to lay a foundation. I will be there only for one term, for one person, one purpose, one term,” she stated, outlining a vision of transformative leadership within a limited timeframe.

Focus on foundations

Karua explained that no single administration can fully solve Kenya’s challenges, but it can establish systems for sustainable progress.

“Nobody will ever finish the job of making Kenya prosperous; you lay a foundation, and you wait for the next team to come and further that,” she said, adding that her pledge was aimed at demystifying power and encouraging rotational leadership in Kenyan politics.

Her message, posted again on September 27, 2025, reinforced her resolve: “Let history record. PLP is ready. Hon. Martha Karua is ready. Kenya is ready. We will reclaim our Republic. We will take our country back… With Unity as our shield. No doubts about it!”

Opposition leaders signal unity

The conference brought together a cross-section of opposition leaders, signalling a new push for unity ahead of the 2027 polls. Among those present were Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Deputy Citizens’ Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, Democratic Action Party–Kenya boss Eugene Wamalwa, and Democratic Party’s Justin Muturi.

Kalonzo hinted at a strengthened alliance with PLP, telling the gathering, “Purple is the colour! I am deeply honoured to attend my twin sister Martha Karua’s PLP’s special NDC today at Ufungamano House, Nairobi. Together with Rigathi Gachagua, Justin Muturi, and Eugene Wamalwa, we shall rescue and liberate Kenya.”

Despite the show of unity, several opposition leaders, including Karua, Kalonzo, and Gachagua, have expressed presidential ambitions. Karua’s focus on a one-term presidency seeks to navigate these dynamics by presenting herself as a leader dedicated to long-term national progress rather than personal tenure.

Her declaration marks a significant moment in the lead-up to the 2027 general election as the opposition works to mount a formidable challenge to the incumbent administration.
