Karua calls for state apology over Kasarani killings during Raila’s public viewing
By Mabonga Makhanu, October 22, 2025PLP leader Martha Karua has called on the state to issue a public apology for the deaths that occurred at Nyayo Stadium during the public viewing of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during an interview on the Alfa House podcast on Tuesday, October 22, 2025, Karua said that if President William Ruto truly mourned the late prime minister, he could have issued a public apology for the deaths that occurred at Kasarani.
She explained that people killed by police, whether by shooting or being trampled in the stampede caused by tear gas at Kasarani, are owed an apology by the state.

Karua added that those who value the ideals Raila Odinga stood for should commit to ensuring that such wanton killing of civilians never happens again.
She said the state ought to investigate and sanction the officers responsible, noting that bullets to the head or chest are deliberate, not accidental.
“Therefore, the people killed by police by shooting or by being trampled on because of the stampede caused by the throwing of tear gas at Kasarani are owed an apology by the state, and if they truly value their deals Raila stood for,” Karua stated.
Karua further criticised the lack of openness in addressing the deaths, stating that the incidents at both Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium should not be hidden or ignored but acknowledged and addressed.
Sifuna’s intervention
These come after 4 people lost their lives as a result of a stampede at Kasarani Stadium, with dozens injured, as reported by the health principal secretary.

Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna has condemned these deaths, saying that they were uncalled for. He went ahead to state that his office is contact with those injured as a result of the fracas
”My office is in contact with some of the families who lost their loved ones during Baba’s send-off at Kasarani and Nyayo. Those were needless and unfortunate deaths, most of them due to gunshot wounds. We have extended our condolences and pledged support in this tragic loss. We hope to have reached all of them by the end of today,” Sifuna started.
