Kaluma accuses senators, MCAs of using impeachment to extort governors
By Mustafa Juma, August 16, 2025Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has launched a scathing attack on Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and Senators following the impeachment of Kericho Governor Erick Mutai.
Taking to his official X account on Friday, August 15, 2025, Kaluma accused them of abusing the impeachment process to extort money from governors.
According to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker, the growing wave of impeachments reflects a wider pattern of political blackmail targeting both county bosses and national government officials.
“Impeachment is the tool MCAs and Senators use to extort Governors! The time has come to control its abuse through laws and regulations,” Kaluma stated.
Kaluma slams senators
The MP also took aim at senators who have publicly denied corruption within the legislature and challenged President William Ruto to name those involved.
Kaluma claimed that the same lawmakers are among the “lead rent-seekers and extortionists” targeting leaders for personal gain.
“The Senators denying corruption in the legislature and asking President @WilliamsRuto to name those involved are the lead rent-seekers and extortionists against Governors and National Government Officials. I will name and shame them so that we may protect @parliamentkenya from their dirty,” he wrote on X.

Governor Mutai’s impeachment
Kaluma made the remarks after Governor Mutai was impeached following a resounding vote in the County Assembly on Friday, August 15, 2025.
Of the 47 members of the County Assembly (MCAs), 33 voted in favour of the resolution to remove him from office, while 14 others voted against the impeachment.
Before the vote, there were contentious discussions at the special session, which was held in the Kericho County Assembly chambers.

The MCAs accuse Mutai of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources.
The assembly easily surpassed the two-thirds majority needed to remove the governor, with 33 MCAs voting in favour.
During his impeachment trial at the Senate on October 14, 2025, Mutai survived after senators voted to throw out his case.
