Former Mukurweini Member of Parliament (MP) Kabando Wa Kabando has lauded Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua over his controversial remarks on grade 10 placement.

Taking to his official X account on the night of Saturday, January 20, 2026, Kabando said that Gachagua’s call for accountability on a basic, critical national education policy is noble.

He further argued that equity in high school admissions is about integrative justice for all of Kenya’s students and that leaders robbing their constituents must be shamed.

“DCP Leader call for accountability on a basic, critical national education policy is noble. Equity in High Schools admissions is about integrative justice for all of Kenya’s students. Leaders robbing their constituents must be shamed. Charge them! Jail them! Kudos, RiggyG!” Kabando wrote on X.

Kabando backs Gachagua’s push

Kabando went ahead to call on the former deputy president not to relent in his push on placements in national schools, claiming that the majority of Kenyans were in support of Gachagua.

“Dear Riggy G; Kindly, no relenting on matter national schools admissions equity. Majority of Kenyans have your back on this agenda. Spot on! Proposal is apt. Only thieving elected leaders are cowed. Crooks who’ve stolen from their own people must lose big time! EDUCATION is a RIGHT,” he stated.

“ALL elected MPs, starting with culprits of North Eastern – Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, plus Marsabit, Turkana, Kilifi, should step forward to account for billions of over 21yrs CDF cash. So should Gavanas who’ve hidden loot in Nairobi skyscrapers, Dubai flats, palaces, sleaze kitty.”

Gachagua’s remarks

Gachagua recently sparked a controversy when he questioned why students from outside the Mt Kenya region were admitted to Alliance High School and Mang’u High School. He argued that many learners from the region were instead placed in schools far from home, a claim that sparked criticism across political and education circles.

Critics viewed the remarks as tribal, noting that national schools are designed to admit students from across the country based on merit and regional balance. Alliance and Mang’u, though located in Central Kenya, are public national institutions and not regional schools.

Chama Cha Kazi Party Leader Moses Kuria accused Gachagua of injecting tribal politics into Kenya’s national schools at a sensitive moment in the country’s education transition.

Kuria made the remarks in a post on X on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

“I have heard Rigathi Gachagua tribalising the last bastion of our values – national schools,” Kuria wrote. “He thinks he has the right to do so simply because he went to Alliance to supply milk when he was a District Officer in the area in the 90s.”
