Junet calls for formalisation of future political deal with Ruto’s UDA

National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has insisted that future pre-election pacts between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) must be formally documented and agreed upon.

Speaking on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Junet emphasised that the terms of engagement should allow the party to clearly outline its demands, given ODM’s status as a major and influential political force in Kenya.

Formalised agreement

“As the ODM, we are a national party, and we will lay out our demands prior to any deals. If the Kenya Kwanza government wants us to enter an agreement on the future alliance, we must have a discussion. We are confident the government will fulfill our current demands, but we cannot afford to enter a coalition without formally stating our demands as we head into the electoral year,” he stated.

He criticised a section of rivals, both within and outside the party, for presuming to speak on behalf of ODM by calling for the party to cease making demands on the government.

Those saying ODM must come without conditions are speaking on their own behalf. We are a big party and must approach our partnership with discussion,” he added.

His remarks come days after Ruto urged the party to strengthen its organs while hinting at a possible future coalition with the veteran party.

Ruto underscored the significance of approaching the next frontier of the new partnership is on a solid base

“You have to make plans yourself and strengthen your ODM party. We want a strong ODM so that we can plan together the leadership of this country. If you make your party strong, I will also make the UDA party strong, and we can then proceed to agree on how we will form the government,” he stated.
