Johana Ng’eno’s succession race: Inside Emurua Dikirr’s battle for constituency representative
By Emmanuel Rono, March 16, 2026After Johana Kipyegon Ngeno died in a helicopter crash on February 28, 2026, there has been a fierce political battle in the Emurua Dikirr Constituency to find his replacement.
The death of the three-term legislator left a big gap in the politics of a constituency that had mostly supported him as leader for more than ten years as he was aiming at renewing his four-term stay in office.
With barely 59 days remaining for the constituency to decide their next leader, potential successors seeking to inherit the post have already triggered early campaigns, clan consultations, and party manoeuvres.

Legacy Politics
Elders from the Kapkaon Clan have backed Naiyanoi Ntutu Ng’eno, the widow of the late Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno, to run for the parliamentary seat that her husband left vacant when he died tragically. This is to protect the political legacy and make sure things stay the same.
The endorsement happened at a meeting on March 12, 2026, at Naiyanoi’s home in Mogondo village, Emurua Dikirr Constituency.
More than 300 elders came together not only to pay their respects but also to talk about who should lead the area in the future. In the end, they all agreed that Naiyanoi would be the best choice. The elders said that the decision was based on honoring Johana Ng’eno’s lasting legacy.
The endorsement has strengthened calls from some residents to keep the parliamentary seat within the family, with the former close aide of Ng’eno, Bernard Ng’eno (Buluu), supporting her endorsement.

Naiyanoi’s potential candidacy could also attract sympathy votes from constituents who closely associated the late MP with the struggles of landless families and marginalized communities.
Even though many encouraged the former aide to join the race, recent posts and public gatherings of the potential leader have backed the widow in seeking the votes to finish what MP Ng’eno started.
“The by-election will not be about Emurua Dikirr alone. Much is at stake. I also CONDEMN, in the strongest terms, any form of attack on Nayanoi Ngeno, our first lady. I ask all supporters of Ngeno to understand that there is no competition on this issue. We must stand together for purposes of survival,” Ng’eno said in a post.
The support for Naiyanoi is seen as a way to keep the seat within the family, ensuring that Ng’eno’s unfinished work, such as community development projects, women empowerment, education initiatives, Kalenjin artists empowerment, and cultural preservation, continues uninterrupted.
Political parties move in
In addition to family succession politics, major political parties are quietly getting ready for the race. The United Democratic Alliance, which Ngeno was a member of during his last term, is likely to run a candidate to keep the seat.

There are reports that other political groups and independent candidates are also getting ready to run for the constituency, which could make the by-election very crowded.
Over the years since the formation of the constituency, the famous David Keter (Dollarline) has been competing with Ngeno for the constituency leadership.
Emerging leaders also including Kibet Rotich and Kipronoh Ezekiel, who was elected in 2022, have been top critics of late Ngong, and they are likely to compete for the post.
IEBC prepares for by-election
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that by-elections will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, to fill three vacant seats in Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County, Porro Ward in Samburu West Constituency, and Endo Ward in Marakwet East Constituency, Elgeyo/Marakwet County.

The announcement was made through a special issue of the Kenya Gazette published on March 13, 2026, and signed by IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon.
The Emurua Dikirr parliamentary seat became vacant on March 10, 2026, following the death of area MP Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno in a helicopter crash on February 28, 2026, in Chepkiep area of Mosop Constituency, Nandi County. He died alongside five others.
