The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has extended the deadline for the submission of the names of running mates, giving presidential aspirants a two-week window to select their preferred deputies.

Speaking at a presser after a meeting with representatives of political parties, IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati announced that the electoral body has pushed the deadline from April 28, 2022, to May 16, 2022.

Chebukati also stated that the names of gubernatorial aspirants and their running mates will also now be submitted on May 16, 2022. The announcement comes after Kenya Kwanza and Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition party protested the initial April 28 deadline.

“The date for submission of aspirants lists for presidential candidates and deputies as well as gubernatorial candidates and deputies will be on 16th of May next month,” he said.

Chebukati however averred that the names for aspirants for Members of National Assembly, Woman Representative, Senate and Members of County Assembly will still be submitted on Thursday, April 28, 2022.

“Independent candidates who are vying as presidential Candidates and Governor candidates will also submit their names on May 16. The other dates remain the same, as you submit the names the Commission reminds you to comply with the two-thirds gender rule,” Chebukati noted.
