Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) Kimani Ichung'wah has dismissed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's one-man, one-vote, one-shilling call during a speech he made on Sunday, June 16, 2024, in Mathira, Nyeri County.

While opposing the move championed by the DP, Ichung'wah argued that that call may end up creating more divisions in the country. The Leader of the Majority in the National Assembly emphasized the need to take a nationally inclusive approach as compared to one that is geared towards helping only one region.

Kenya ambaye ukiwa mkaaji hapa Mathira, utaenda Mandera ufanye biashara upate pesa uweke mfukoni uelimishe watoto wako. Mtu akiwa Mandera akuje Kikuyu afanye biashara na apate pesa na aelimishe watu wake."

The Kenya Kwanza vocal MP asked the leaders to keep the interests of the common man ahead in order to uplift them economically.

Tukakuambia hata ukiwa mama mboga, tutakujengea soko, tukuambie tunakujengea soko wapi hapa Karatina. Tukuambie tunarudisha pesa aje kwa mfuko yako."

Ichung'wah's response to Gachagua

In an apparent response to Gachagua, the MP said that leaders should be selfless and pursue national interests as opposed to interests that will be understood as personal.

"Our actions as leaders should be guided by humility and selflessness, putting the needs and interests of others above our own ambitions and desires. We must strive to uplift and support our community with genuine care and integrity, rather than manipulating and deceiving them for personal gain," he added.

"True leadership and community service are built on respect, honesty, and a commitment to the common good, not on using people as mere tools for selfish purposes."
