Havi: We need new crop of leaders in Africa
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, January 28, 2026Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President and lawyer Nelson Havi has said that Africa needs a new breed of leaders who will be in a position to steer the countries and the region in the right direction
Speaking at a local TV station on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Havi has noted that Africa needs a breed of leaders who are selfless and have in mind the development of their regions and the continent as a whole.
“We need less of Suluhu in Tanzania, less of Yoweri in Uganda. We need more of Malema in South Africa, and I don’t know who we need in Kenya. We need a new crop of leaders in Africa, not the kind of leaders we have now. We need selfless leaders who have in mind the development of their country, of their regions and the continent,” Havi said.

The outspoken lawyer noted that in East African countries, the respective heads of state have taken over the countries and have abandoned democracy.
“Suluhu has taken over Tanzania, and Museveni is in charge of Uganda. Kenya is next, with elections on the horizon. Kenyans must make the right decision. “Havi added
Havi has further lashed out at African leaders, saying they have no capacity to represent Africa globally, giving an instance where heads of state attend forums to listen to lectures rather than addressing the challenges that face Africa as a continent. This, according to Havi, paints a picture of Africa being highly misrepresented.
Havi on Kenya leadership
In his view, while narrowing down to Kenya, Havi has noted that Kenyans must make the right decisions while going into the elections to ensure that Kenya as a country is well represented globally by leaders who can face the international leaders to state the challenges affecting the country, giving an example of the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who could speak boldly of his nation.
