Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday, June 10, 2024, held a key United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting at the ruling party's headquarters at Hustler Centre along Makindi Road, Nairobi.

Gachagua's meeting comes in the wake of the escalating wrangles that have marred the President William Ruto-led party.

Gachagua's EDRC meeting

Gachagua held a consultative meeting with the UDA Party's National Steering Committee and Electoral Disputes Resolution Committee (EDRC), which he has termed as a pursuit to ensure the ruling Party sustains vibrancy and growth.

"In our pursuit to ensure the ruling United Democratic Alliance Party sustains vibrancy and growth, today evening I held a consultative meeting with the Party's National Steering Committee and Electoral Disputes Resolution Committee (EDRC) at Hustlers Plaza Nairobi," Gachagua announced.

The DP was received at the party headquarters by UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.

UDA elections

Gachagua through his official X account on Monday evening said that the meeting's discussions centred on the ongoing party elections.

The second in command further says that his meeting also centred on other key activities and programmes of the party.

Party Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, Secretary-General Cleophas Malala, Vice-Chairman Hassan Omar, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, National Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi, EDRC Chairperson Joy Mdivo and Vice Chair Adrian Kamotho together with other officials, were present," Gachagua said in the social media statement.

Gachagua-Ruto tiff

Ruto held National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at State House, Nairobi on Saturday, June 8, 2024, where he is said to have addressed a myriad of issues affecting the party, including petitions calling for the removal of the party’s officials and National Elections Board (NEB) members.

During the NEC meeting, the perceived tiff between Ruto and his deputy Gachagua is said not to have been addressed, but the head of state gave the leaders a dress down, warning them against using his name in their political manoeuvres.

Ruto directed that a National Steering Committee (NSC) meeting be convened to help resolve challenges facing the secretariat.

There have been reports of the emergence of factions following the polls that kicked off on April 26, 2024, in seven counties, with protests being witnessed in some areas over disputes.

In Nairobi where DP Gachagua and Governor Johnson Sakaja have locked horns over the process of elections, Ruto urged for a quick political settlement to allow the polls to proceed.

Gachagua is said to be fronting Embakasi North MP James Gakuya against Sakaja for the Nairobi county party chairmanship post.

UDA has since postponed the Nairobi county elections which had been scheduled for Monday, June 10, 2024.
