Gachagua’s DCP party clarifies Maureen Gathigia’s death amid murder claims
By Kenneth Mwenda, March 18, 2026The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has moved to clarify rumours surrounding the death of popular blogger Maureen Gathigia Kinyua.
In a statement released on March 18, 2026, the party emphasised that official investigations confirmed her death in 2019 was a traffic accident, not a murder.
“Popular blogger and social media personality Maureen Gathigia Kinyua tragically passed away on May 24, 2019, in a road traffic accident near Sagana Catholic Church in Mathira, Nyeri County. Investigations into the incident classified it as a hit-and-run, and there is no official evidence linking her death to murder or foul play,” the DCP statement said.
“The driver involved was subsequently charged in Karatina Court with causing death by dangerous driving. He denied the charges and was later released on a Ksh150,000 bond while awaiting further legal proceedings. Court records and police investigations consistently indicate that the death resulted from a traffic accident rather than any deliberate criminal act.”
Maureen, a blogger with a strong social media presence, died on May 24, 2019 near Sagana Catholic Church in Mathira, Nyeri County.
“Despite these facts, misinformation has circulated online suggesting that Maureen’s death was a murder. Such claims are unverified and baseless, and they risk causing unnecessary distress to her family, friends, and supporters,” the DCP statement said.
Comments draw public criticism
The DCP strongly criticised these comments. The party called on public figures to exercise caution when discussing sensitive matters.
“Media experts and civil society leaders emphasise that public figures, including President William Ruto, should exercise caution and avoid making statements based on unverified claims,” the statement said. “Such statements cause distress to Maureen’s family and spread misinformation.”
Maureen’s death in 2019 drew widespread mourning. Then-Deputy President William Ruto personally called her mother to offer condolences. He described her as “a keen, dedicated and thorough young girl” who promoted Jubilee’s agenda online, particularly the Big Four projects.
“Condolences to the family and friends of Maureen Gathigia Kinyua. … Rest in peace.” he wrote on Twitter.
Maureen had built a significant following as a blogger and social media activist. She engaged with Kenyan issues and supported national development efforts. Her sudden death shocked residents of Nyeri County and followers across the country.
