Gachagua warns United Opposition principals of moles within their parties
The former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has warned his United Opposition allies about moles within their political formations.
Speaking in Kandara during a rally meant to welcome area MP Chege Njuguna to the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, he warned that President William Ruto has planted moles in their parties.
“Mimi nataka niambie principals ya United opposition, mkuwe very careful, katika vyama vyenu, kwa sababu ndani ya vyama vyenu Kasongo ameeka watu huko ndani,” Gachagua said.

According to Gachagua, they should be careful with some members within their formation, saying they might think they are sailing in the same ship while their party members are taking orders from somewhere else.
He gave an example of a leader he did not name within one of the United Opposition political parties who went to a radio station and stated that, when Gachagua becomes a presidential candidate, where would others, such as Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, go?
He said such remarks are meant to sow seeds of discord among the United Opposition principals.
Gachagua went on to state that if he becomes the flagbearer of the now-united opposition, it will only be after a resolution by all the principals agreeing that he should be the one. He also noted that it is not a must for him to become the flagbearer, adding that anybody else can take the position.
He insisted that whoever will emerge as the United Opposition flagbearer will do so through consensus among all principals.
Kioni’s remarks
This comes moments after former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni, during an interview, praised the DCP leader, saying he appears to be the only hard-working politician within the United Opposition. He also questioned that if Gachagua becomes the flagbearer, where would leaders like Matiang’i and Kalonzo go?

This also comes at a time when United Opposition leaders are divided on the method to use in selecting their flagbearer. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is demanding boardroom negotiations and consensus, while Fred Matiang’i opposes this approach and prefers a scientific opinion poll.
In Matiang’i’s proposal, the candidate who garners the most votes in the poll becomes the flagbearer, the second becomes the running mate, and the third assumes the position of prime minister.
