Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hit back at his detractors in the raging debate of the one man, one vote one shilling proposal.

Speaking during the International Scientific Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya in Mombasa on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Gachagua said he was concerned with the displeasure of other leaders over advocating for the affairs of his people.

"Everybody comes from somewhere and nobody should ever make you feel embarrassed about your identity," Gachagua said.

The Deputy President stated that he was in Mombasa and would soon be back in the village from where he would speak the language understood best by his people.

Gachagua opposed

Gachagua has been met with strong opposition from a section of Mt Kenya leaders over his suggestion that resource allocation should be tied to population as opposed to land mass.

A section of GEMA leaders including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki have come to openly oppose the idea, positing that promoters of the idea could plunge the country into chaos over inequality.

On the other hand, a section of other leaders maintain that the proposal is an idea whose time has come.

Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba, a fierce proponent of the revenue allocation model, is among the few leaders sailing with Gachagua in the same boat.

Central Region Economic Block (CREB) chairperson and Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga is also one of the passionate leaders drumming up support for the controversial proposal.

During an April 26, 2024 meeting with the Commission for Revenue Allocation (CRA), Kahiga decried the current formula for allocating revenue to counties saying for a long time the central region has been misconstrued to be developed.

"The pain we have is not getting what we deserve. The first formula was about how we take from central to other places. An injustice is an injustice," Kahiga said.

On Sunday, June 9, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen openly disagreed with Governor Kahiga over some of his political sentiments.

During the prayer service at the AIPCA church in Nyeri Town, the two leaders criticised each other, with Kahiga saying the Deputy President was a resident of Nyeri and that they would not be silent when he was being mistreated by the state.

Wacheni niwaambie watu wa Nyeri. Rigathi Gachagua sio Vice President wenu. Ni Vice President of the Republic of Kenya (Let me tell you, Nyeri people. Rigathi Gachagua is not your Vice President. He is the Vice President of Kenya),” Murkomen said.
