By , April 20, 2026

The Democratic for the Citizens Party (DCP) party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has announced that it will have a candidate in the forthcoming by-election in the Ol Kalou Constituency.

Gachagua has said that the party already had nine aspirants vying for the ticket.

Speaking in an interview with Kameme TV on Monday, April 20, 2026, Gachagua has promised his supporters that the party would hold free and fair nominations that would be transparent and democratic. He observed that DCP would like the people of Olkalou to end up settling on who will be the flagbearer in the party during the by-election.

“DCP will field a candidate in the Olkalou constituency by-elections. DCP so far has 9 candidates for the by-elections, and I want to guarantee the people of Olkalou free and fair nominations for the party. We want to give the people the chance to decide on their candidate who will be our flagbearer,” Gachagua said.

He said the strong interest indicates a rising belief in the party as a grassroots appeal.

Gachagua further noted that the level of competition within the party reflects growing confidence among aspirants in DCP’s internal democratic structures. He said the party intends to use the nominations as a model for transparency, insisting that the process will be open to all qualified contenders without favouritism or external influence.

The Olkalou by-election is expected to attract significant political attention as parties position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle. Political observers say that the outcome of the nominations could also test the strength of emerging political formations in the region and their ability to mobilise grassroots support.

Vacancy in the constituency

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is expected to announce the dates for the parliamentary by-elections for the constituency following the death of its Member of Parliament, David Njuguna Kiaraho, whose death was officially announced by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula Kiaraho, in Notification No. 002 of 2026 on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
