Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has called on President William Ruto to explain to the Northern Kenya people why his government has not heeded the promises he made to the residents of the area during the campaign period.

Gachagua has called on Ruto to explain to the people why he keeps lying to the residents when he visits the area.

Speaking during a press conference with the media at the DCP headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the former deputy president has lamented the poor state of development in the area despite the president making promises of development in the area.

Gachagua has noted that the president has not met the promises despite having promised them during the campaign period in 2022.

“William Ruto should explain to the people of Northern Kenya why he keeps on lying to them anytime he visits the region with no tangible development,” Gachagua said.

Declare drought a national disaster

Gachagua has further slammed the president for leaving Northern Kenya behind in relief food aid when the area is currently affected by drought, the residents suffering from a lack of food and water.

Gachagua has called on President Ruto to take relief food with him on his visit to the region. He has urged the President to declare the drought in the region a national disaster.

“We wanted to tell William Ruto, as he goes to the north, that the problem of the northern people is the problem of accountability. Theft of public resources by the leaders he wines and dines with. He is going to be with those leaders in military choppers, blowing dust on hungry people with no food and water. I would like to ask him to carry food and water to the people of northern Kenya,” Gachagua added.

Gachagua’s call for an audit

Ruto’s visit to Northern Kenya has come at a time when the DCP Leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has been leading the opposition brigade in castigating the Northern Kenya leaders over mismanagement and theft of public resources meant to develop the region, leading to its slow development.

Gachagua has been calling for a special audit on the money allocated to development in the counties of Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, and Garissa since devolution came into place.
