Allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are now threatening to ditch the United Democratic Alliance, accusing President William Ruto of trying to influence the outcome of the party’s grassroots elections in Nairobi.

Rigathi’s allies yesterday claimed there was a plot to rig the party’s grassroots elections set for Friday in favour of Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja.

The pro-Gachagua camp is led by Embakasi North MP James Gakuya who is contesting the chairman’s position against Sakaja.

The campaigns have split the party down the middle, with the pro-Gachagua camp accusing President Ruto of trying to impose Sakaja on the party membership.

Ahead of the Friday exercise, Gakuya yesterday warned he and his supporters would ditch the ruling party if he is defeated.
