The Kenya African National Union (KANU) Secretary of Political Affairs, Fredrick Tshombe Okango, has, with immediate effect, resigned from his position, as well as cutting ties with the party.

In his resignation letter to KANU Secretary General George Gewa Wainaina and copied to Registrar of Political Parties, Sophia Sitati, dated Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Okango cited shifting realities in the country’s political ecosystem as part of the reasons behind his resignation.

Okango also noted that the decision taken reflects on his political career growth, further noting that he will engage the public on his next move.

”I hereby resign, with immediate effect, from the position of Secretary of Political Affairs and from membership of KANU, in line with the Political Parties Act, 2011 and the KANU Constitution,” the letter read in part.

Reasons for resignation

”This step reflects both my political growth and the shifting realities of our nation’s politics. Kenya is at a crossroads that calls for bold choices, fresh leadership and transformative renewal. Guided by this conviction, I will, in due course, engage Kenyans on the phase of my political journey,” Okango added.

Okango further expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve one of the country’s oldest political parties in the capacity he held before quitting.

”I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served and contributed to KANU’s vision, and I wish the party well as it continues its role in Kenya’s democratic journey,” Fredrick Okango said.

Meanwhile, Okango’s resignation from KANU comes weeks after former ministers and Members of Parliament who served in the KANU era joined the Kamba community elders to endorse Wiper party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, for the 2027 presidency.

The leaders, led by former Ministers Titus Mbathi, George Ndotto, and former Assistant Ministers Ezekiel Mweu and Isaac Muoki, who all served under former President Daniel Moi, said Kalonzo stands a better chance of unseating the incumbent, President William Ruto.

The group included the Akamba Clan Governing Council of Elders and a caucus of Kitui leaders, who pledged to champion Kalonzo’s candidacy as a path to restoring Kenya’s lost glory.

“Kambas are after the presidency. Those betraying the cause by being bought with little coins should spare us the shame,” said Mbathi at a press briefing in Kitui on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
