Economist and political analyst Fred Ogola has claimed that the ongoing clash between the Council of Governors and the senators is in the public interest of the Kenyan people because it has come to public knowledge that public funds are embezzled.

Speaking in an interview on a local TV station on Wednesday, February 10, 2026, the Commissioner at the People’s Restorative Justice Commission, Fred Ogola, said that this is the only way the matter of embezzlement of funds can be resolved. He claimed that both the senators and the governors are corrupt and have been collaborating.

“Senators have a mandate to call governors to parliament and ask questions. If governors claim they were asked for a bribe, it is true. If they claim they are not managing funds well, that is true. For the first time, we have set a thief to catch a thief, and this is the only way the matter will be resolved. This clash between senators and governors is good for the citizen because they now know their money is being stolen,” Fred Ogola said.

There has been an escalating standoff between the Senate and the Council of Governors (CoG) over claimed extortion and intimidation.

The dispute intensified after governors threatened to boycott Senate summons, accusing members of the County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) of extortion, harassment, and political witch-hunts when they appear to respond to audit queries.

Kingi Defends Senate

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has dismissed claims by the Council of Governors (CoG) regarding harassment by Senate audit committees and warned county chiefs against suspending appearances.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Kingi said the Senate’s oversight role over county governments is firmly anchored in the Constitution and cannot be undermined by unsubstantiated allegations.

“The Senate has noted with concern allegations contained in a press statement issued by the Council of Governors (CoG), and subsequently reported in the media, regarding the operations of Senate Committees—specifically the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) and the Senate County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee (CPIC),” Kingi stated.

CoG dismisses Kingi’s statement

The Council of Governors dismissed Senate Speaker Amason Kingi in what they termed as a characterisation of governors’ complaints as unsubstantiated, insisting the Council of Governors (CoG) has evidence to support allegations of harassment by Senate audit committees.

In a video statement posted on the Council of Governors’ X account on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Kahiga responded defiantly to Kingi’s warning against suspending Senate appearances, saying governors are also elected leaders who deserve respect.

“We have heard today how he has come to threaten us and say such things. We want to say we have evidence to support our claims,” Kahiga said.
