Former Othaya MP joins Gachagua’s party

The announcement was made on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in a move that strengthens DCP’s position in Nyeri County, particularly in the constituency once represented by former President Mwai Kibaki.
Gachagua shared the news on X.
“I have this morning welcomed Hon. Gichuki Mugambi, the immediate former MP for Othaya, to the DCP party,” he stated.
“I served with Hon. Mugambi in the 12th Parliament, and he has told me that he has been instructed by Othaya residents to be in their party of choice, @DCP_Democracy. Our party, DCP, remains open to all progressive leaders who wish to have a future in leadership.”
Othaya carries symbolic weight in Kenyan politics. As the former stronghold of the late third President, Mwai Kibaki, the constituency remains closely watched in Central Kenya. Mugambi’s move to DCP could signal a realignment among local leaders and voters.
Tensions in Othaya
This development also follows a recent attack on Gachagua in Othaya. Just days earlier, on January 29, 2026, an unknown assailants disrupted a service at Witima ACK Church, where Gachagua attended.
They hurled teargas into the congregation, causing chaos and injuries. Mugambi publicly condemned the violence.
Nyeri Woman Rep Rahab Mukami Wachira also denounced the incident, calling for those responsible to face justice. The attack highlighted rising tensions in the region, with some locals blaming political rivals for trying to undermine DCP’s influence.
The tension forced opposition leaders to march to Inspector General Douglas Kanja’s office, where they issued a 2-week ultimatum on apprehending those behind the attack.
Gachagua has repeatedly urged leaders from the Mount Kenya region to join DCP and strengthen it. In an interview in January, he outlined strategies to consolidate the voting bloc, including partnerships and economic drives.
Gachagua, who served as Deputy President from 2022 until his impeachment in October 2024, draws on his experience to rally support. He positions DCP as a defender against what he calls poor governance.
