Embu county speaker accuses United Opposition of planning to disrupt Evurore by-elections
By Brian Malila, February 25, 2026Embu County Assembly Speaker Josiah Thiriku has reported an alleged security threat at Ishiara Police Station, claiming that individuals have been mobilised to attack him and his home ahead of the Evurore Ward by-election.
After recording a statement in the Occurrence Book, number 09, on 25/02/2026, at Ishiara Police Station, Thiriku addressed the press and accused the United Opposition of planning to disrupt the electoral process and target him.
“I have credible information that goons are being planted to attack me and my home tomorrow. I want this on record because my security is under threat,” said Thiriku.
He further stated that the individuals had been given clear instructions to attack him, urging security agencies to heighten surveillance and ensure his safety during the by-election.
“The instructions given to these goons are to attack me. I am calling upon the police to enhance security so that I am not injured, and the election remains peaceful,” he added.
In a separate press conference, church leaders in Evurore Ward appealed for calm and peaceful participation during the by-election.
Jacob Njiru called on all political players and their supporters to uphold the rule of law and avoid chaos.
“Elections should not be a source of violence. We urge everyone to remain calm and respect the law during the by-election,” Njiru said.
Michael Njeru echoed the call for peace, urging voters to return home immediately after casting their ballots to prevent unnecessary tension.
“After voting, residents should go home and avoid loitering around polling stations because that may create unnecessary tension,” he said.
As residents prepare to vote, attention now shifts to security agencies to ensure a smooth, peaceful, and credible electoral process in Evurore Ward.
Evurore/Muminji contests
The political temperature in Mbeere North has hit boiling point as Evurore and Mumenji wards head to the ballot tomorrow turning the by-election into a fierce showdown between the opposition and the government.
In Mumenji Ward, the contest has drawn heavyweight backing.

Former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti of the DEP Party has teamed up with Justin Muturi of the DP Party to rally behind Boniface Kariuki, who is vying on Kivuti’s party ticket. On the other side, the government has thrown its weight behind Peterson Weche, flying the UDA flag in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes duel.
In Evurore Ward, the battle lines are equally clear. The government is backing Duncan Muratia Nyaga, while the opposition has fronted Albert Kigoro under Justin Muturi’s DP Party. Several other candidates from different parties have also joined the race, adding further intrigue and unpredictability to the contest.

The by-election was necessitated after the former MCAs, Newton Kariuki Ndwiga (Mumenji) and Duncan Mbui (Evurore), resigned to contest the recently concluded Mbeere North parliamentary by-election. However, their gamble did not pay off, as the seat was clinched by Leo wa Muthende.
Now, all eyes are on Evurore and Mumenji as voters prepare to decide who carries their mandate in a contest that has evolved beyond a ward race into a symbolic face-off between rival political forces in Mbeere North.
