Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje to seek re-election on DCP ticket – Gachagua

Embakasi West MP Mark Muriithi Mwenje is set to join the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), becoming the latest legislator expected to align himself with the political outfit associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The announcement was made by Gachagua on his social media pages on Saturday, July 4, 2026, after hosting the Embakasi West lawmaker at his Wamunyoro residence.

According to Gachagua, Mwenje informed him that his supporters had instructed him to seek re-election in the 2027 General Election on a DCP ticket.

“Later in the day, I received Hon. Mark Muriithi Mwenje, the MP for Embakasi West, at Wamunyoro residence. Hon. Mwenje informed me that he had been instructed by his supporters to defend his seat next year under the DCP Party ticket,” Gachagua wrote.

The former deputy president said he congratulated the MP for listening to the wishes of his constituents and choosing to align with them politically.

“I congratulated him for listening to his people on the ground and aligning with them,” Gachagua added.

Mwenje’s political moves

Mark Mwenje, who was elected as the Embakasi West MP on a Jubilee Party ticket in the 2022 General Election, has increasingly positioned himself alongside the opposition after initially maintaining a neutral stance following the formation of the broad anti-government coalition.

During the October 2024 vote on the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Mwenje notably skipped the National Assembly sitting and was recorded as absent during the historic vote.

In recent months, however, the outspoken lawmaker has openly aligned himself with the United Opposition. He has actively campaigned for the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate during the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election and has been among opposition MPs and senators holding joint press conferences to criticise the Kenya Kwanza administration over various national issues.

Mwenje also recently aimed at Jubilee deputy party leader Jeremiah Kioni over her criticism of DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua. He challenged Kioni to clearly state where her political loyalties lie, arguing that her repeated attacks on Gachagua had raised questions about whom she was working with politically.
