Eddy Oketch suspended from Senate for 3 days over gross misconduct
Migori Senator Eddy Oketch has been suspended from the Senate for three sitting days after Speaker Amason Kingi ruled that he had engaged in gross disorderly conduct during proceedings in the House.
The suspension was announced on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, after a heated moment in the chamber in which Kingi repeatedly ordered Oketch to leave but the senator failed to comply immediately.
“Senator Eddy, leave the chamber immediately,” Kingi said several times as the situation escalated.
The Speaker later warned that if Oketch did not leave, the Sergeant-at-Arms would remove him from the chamber.
Kingi then cited Standing Order 122, which deals with gross disorderly conduct by members. He said the rules apply when a senator defies the ruling or direction of the Speaker or a committee chairperson.
Under the Senate rules, the Speaker can order a senator whose conduct is considered grossly disorderly to withdraw immediately from Parliament. On a first offence, the suspension can last for up to three sitting days, including the day the order is made.

Kingi enforces Senate rules
After reviewing the incident, Kingi ruled that Oketch’s conduct met the threshold for disciplinary action.
“Senator Eddy Oketch, having persistently defied the direction of the Speaker, and the Speaker having had to order the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort him out of the chamber, the senator’s conduct squarely falls under the operation of Standing Order 122,” Kingi said.
He then declared that the Migori senator would be suspended for three sitting days, including Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
Kingi also addressed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna during the session as he tried to restore order in the chamber.
The suspension means Oketch will not attend Senate sittings for the next three sitting days unless the House rules otherwise. During that period, he will be barred from participating in debates or voting in the chamber.
Parliamentary standing orders are designed to maintain order and ensure debates run smoothly. Speakers rarely invoke suspensions unless they believe a member has ignored repeated warnings or openly challenged the authority of the chair.
Oketch, who is serving his first term as Migori senator, has been an active voice in recent Senate debates, especially on governance and accountability issues.
The Senate is expected to continue with its scheduled business while the suspension remains in force.
