‘Deal with issues that Kenyans are raising’ – Uhuru tells Ruto
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has challenged President William Ruto to deal with the issues affecting Kenyans instead of meddling with the former first family.
Uhuru was speaking on Friday moments after police officers raided the home of his firstborn son Jomo in Karen, allegedly looking for weapons.
"When you are a government, you are elected to govern in accordance with the wishes of the people. Why don’t they deal with the issues and concerns Kenyans are raising? That’s what they should be dealing with, not looking for scapegoats," Uhuru said.
“When I was in power I was dealing with the issues Kenyans were raising.”
Uhuru has also refuted claims that he has been funding Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party affairs.
Uhuru says that Ruto's government has been using attacks to his family to divert attention and avoid being accountable to Kenyans.
"If you have a problem, sema shida iko wapi. Do you have to go and look for my mother? Do you have to go and look for my children? Come for me, I’m here!" he said.
Uhuru on associating with Raila
The former President says that his association with Azimio leader Raila Odinga is his democratic right, which cannot be curtailed by the government.
“It is my democratic right to support Odinga. Moi died as a life member of KANU, was there a problem with that? I thought and believed we lived in a democracy, and that is why I handed over…I may not have supported this government, but I accepted the will of the people,” he said.
Uhuru also accused the current government of trying a "coup" on the Jubilee party, which he remained adamant that he will not hand over.
"My plan was to surrender my party, but what I completely rejected was the coup that was planned by this government to take over my party forcefully," he added.
