Cracks within Nairobi UDA leadership as ward reps seek change

Cracks have emerged within the leadership of United Democratic Alliance UDA at the Nairobi County Assembly with a section ward representatives planning to oust their leaders.
At least 35 MCAs from the President William Ruto-led party have appended their signatures in support of the ouster of Minority leader Antony Kiragu and Minority Whip Mark Mugambi.
According to the UDA lawmakers, the two had failed to offer direction and leadership to party members on critical legislative matters.
“We have been patient with both the Leader of Minority and Minority Chief Whip for far too long, but now we must let them go for the benefit of our party and members. Enough is enough,” they said.
They accused both leaders of pursuing their interests, excluding the needs of the members. The UDA MCAs also claimed the two leaders have been undermining and sidelining women, especially those who were nominated to the leadership space.
Nominated MCA Joyce Kamau stated the two leaders were also selfish when allocating opportunities to their colleagues and residents of Nairobi.
As a result, they call upon UDA’s party leadership to install new leaders at the assembly who will truly represent the interests of the people.
“With the foregoing, we have only one solution under our Standing Orders and that is to remove both MCA Kiragu and Mugambi from office so that our beloved party, UDA can appoint new leaders who will restore sanity in the Assembly leadership,” the MCAs said.
According to the UDA lawmakers, the two had failed to offer direction and leadership to party members on critical legislative matters.
However, responding to the allegations, Kiragu said his critics were not happy with his ambition to vie for the Nairobi UDA chairman position. He said he was aware of the signatures collected against them but termed the whole process as Jealousy
“I know some signatures have been appended but these are people who are jealous of my success and that I am aiming for a bigger position, UDA Nairobi chairman,” Kiragu added.
Last year, UDA named thr Waithaka MCA Kiragu as Minority leader to be deputized by South B MCA Waithera Chege. Umoja One MCA Mark Mugambi was named Minority Whip and Nominated MCA Joyce Muthoni as his deputy.
Mlango Kubwa ward rep Susan Makungu was nominated to seat at the Nairobi County Assembly Service Board.
