Cherargei affirms ODM–UDA coalition to extend past 2027
By Kenneth Mwenda, October 30, 2025Senator Samson Cherargei has backed Oburu Oginga to take full charge of ODM following the death of Raila Odinga, while signalling a long-term political partnership between ODM and UDA that could stretch beyond 2027.
Speaking during a morning TV interview on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Cherargei said Oburu should be confirmed by all structures as the new party leader to put the house in order at a time he called uncertain for ODM and the country.
He praised the ODM Central Committee for settling on Oburu and urged other party structures to give him full authority.
Cherargei argued that Oburu’s age and temperament make him suited to steady the party, saying younger leaders would crash the whole thing. He emphasised that Raila’s legacy will guide ODM long after his passing, noting that “ODM was Raila and Raila is ODM.”

The senator also defended the partnership between ODM and UDA, insisting the cooperation was genuine and honoured by President William Ruto. He claimed Raila ensured ODM entered government before his death, describing that as part of his succession plan.
“No party is formed to be in opposition,” Cherargei said, adding that ODM’s priority is to be in government or part of it. He dismissed criticism from leaders opposed to the pact.

ODM-UDA coalition
Cherargei further suggested that the partnership would evolve into a formal coalition that could form the government in 2027 and beyond.
“I can assure you UDA and ODM will work beyond 2027 to form government for the second term of President William Ruto’s administration,” he said.
He predicted the emerging coalition would outmatch any united opposition front, telling those uncomfortable in either party to take a walk.
He also claimed UDA remains intact after removing leaders who disagreed with the president’s agenda. He urged politicians who fall out with their parties to resign and seek a fresh mandate from voters. Cherargei praised ODM leaders who defended the partnership.
