Bobi Wine calls out security forces over deadly crackdown during his campaigns

Ugandan opposition and National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has renewed his criticism of the country’s security forces following the death of one of his supporters, Edward Mukwaya.

In a statement shared on X on Sunday, December 28, 2025, Bobi Wine linked Mukwaya’s death to what he described as a sustained crackdown on people associated with his political campaigns. The remarks come at a time when political activity in Uganda remains tense, with opposition figures repeatedly raising alarm over the conduct of police and military officers during mobilisation efforts.

Bobi Wine said the death of Mukwaya was not an isolated case, but part of a wider pattern that has unfolded since his campaigns began. He painted a picture of supporters who, he claims, face constant danger simply for taking part in political activities. His comments have once again brought national attention to allegations of excessive force and intimidation during opposition engagements.

“Comrade Edward Mukwaya joins the scores of our people who have been murdered by the police and military since our campaigns started,” he wrote

The opposition leader argued that such incidents continue because those responsible operate with a sense of protection. He suggested that the absence of consequences has allowed abuses to persist, leaving ordinary citizens exposed and fearful.

“Some criminals in uniform continue to murder, maim or illegally detain our people because they enjoy protection from Museveni and his criminal system,” he stated

Despite the anger and frustration in his message, Bobi Wine also struck a note of hope, insisting that accountability, even if delayed, remains possible.

He framed this hope as a collective belief shared by those who feel wronged, rather than a personal assurance.

“We remain hopeful that one day, there will be accountability for every crime against humanity,” his statement reads

The statement concluded on a sombre note, as Bobi Wine paid tribute to Mukwaya, showing the personal loss felt within his movement.

“Rest in peace, Mukwaya!” he concluded
