Babu Owino hints at rift within ODM over his rising influence
By Kenneth Mwenda, October 9, 2025Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has suggested that some of his colleagues within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) are uneasy about his growing political influence.
Speaking on Thursday morning during a live interview on a local radio station, the outspoken legislator dismissed claims of discord with his party, insisting that he remains loyal to ODM and its leader, Raila Odinga.
“Si mimi ni mjumbe wa ODM? Mimi sina shida katika ODM. Sina shida na party leader wangu. Sina shida na wabunge wenzangu, lakini wao wanaweza kuwa na shida na mimi,” Babu said.
He likened his situation to the Biblical story of Joseph, saying that some MPs within the party were uncomfortable with his political ambitions.

“Unajua ndugu yangu, Joseph alipokuwa na ndoto kwenye Bibilia, akambia babake na ndugu zake ya kwamba siku moja nitakuwa kiongozi wenyu. Mandugu zake wakakasirika. Hiyo ndiyo inasumbuwa wabunge wetu hapa ODM. Wengine wanaona huyu ndugu anaenda kuwa rais hapa mbele,” he explained.
Babu said his focus is on serving Kenyans and strengthening the party’s grassroots network, but admitted that envy and suspicion are creating unnecessary tension among ODM members.

Loyalty to ODM unshaken
His comments come a day after he defended his ties with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, dismissing speculation that he was planning to ditch ODM. Babu has also maintained that his interactions with President William Ruto are issue-based and not personal, insisting that his criticism of the government remains centred on public welfare.
Observers say the MP’s recent statements reflect growing unease within ODM as younger members push for more influence in the party’s future direction.
Despite the speculation, Babu reiterated that he remains firmly behind Raila Odinga and the ideals of ODM.
“I am loyal to my party and our leader, Raila Odinga. I will continue working for Kenyans under ODM,” he said.
