Babu Owino denies rebellion, says his fight is against high cost of living

Embakassi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has dismissed claims of political rebellion, insisting that his actions are driven purely by a desire to address Kenya’s rising cost of living and hold the government accountable.

“There’s no rebellion, only passion. Passion to fight for the people, passion to ensure high cost of living is reduced in this country, to end overtaxation, and passion to ensure the promises that were made by the government, including provision of jobs to our young men and women, those jobs are given to Kenyans,” Babu Owino said in a statement this week.

The outspoken legislator, while speaking on Thursday, August 21, 2025, during a political talk show aired by a local radio station, emphasised that his efforts are rooted in the principles of governance, stressing the importance of operating within the doctrine of separation of powers.

“Passion to ensure that we act within the doctrine of separation of powers, checks and balances,” he added.

Babu Owino’s remarks come amid increasing public concern over the economic pressures facing ordinary Kenyans. With inflation and taxation continuing to strain household budgets, the MP’s statement resonates with many who have long called for more effective government accountability and the fulfilment of employment promises to the youth.

Observers note that Babu Owino has emerged as a prominent voice for economic justice, often underscoring the disconnect between political promises and actual outcomes. By framing his activism as a fight for affordable living and proper job allocation, he seeks to clarify that his agenda is policy-driven rather than politically disruptive.

Political analysts say that his approach underscores a broader debate in Kenya about the role of MPs in pushing for citizens’ welfare while maintaining institutional respect. His insistence on balancing accountability with adherence to governance principles reflects a growing trend among lawmakers who aim to champion public interests without overstepping constitutional boundaries.

As the country continues to grapple with economic challenges, Babu Owino’s statement reinforces his position as a lawmaker focused on tangible outcomes for Kenyans. While critics may attempt to frame his actions as rebellious, he maintains that his sole motivation is ensuring that government promises translate into real benefits for citizens.
