Azimio faces acid test in the push to hold joint party primaries

A plan by Azimio La Umoja lieutenants to zone the country and parties to field candidates based on their strengths has run into headwinds.

This is after the Democratic Action Party, one of the 10 political outfits that have shown interest in joining Azimio, opposed the scheduled zoning and proposal by the coalition partners to conduct joint nominations in areas outside their individual strongholds.

Led by the party boss Wafula Wamunyinyi (pictured) and his deputy Ayub Savula, the leaders said plans to conduct joint nominations with affiliate parties will not work as they are focused in giving direct nominations to aspirants across the country. Duo also revealed that they had not entered into any agreement  with Raila Odinga’s Azimio Movement but were backing his 2022 presidential bid.

“I want to make it clear that we have not entered into any negotiations whatsoever. We have not talked to any of our partners about the process of nomination. We are confident as a young party,” Wamunyinyi told a press conference at Chui House, the party headquarters, yesterday.
