Alai: Nairobi challenges are beyond Moses Kuria, Sakaja and Babu Owino
By Joel Masibo, October 13, 2025Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly, Robert Alai, has argued that major administrative problems bedevilling Nairobi City County are due to a lack of visionary leadership.
Alai’s sentiments concerning the leadership crisis in Nairobi County come at a time when President William Ruto has pledged to help the incumbent Governor, Johnson Sakaja, resolve the garbage and waste management in the county.
Talking to X on Monday, October 13, 2025, the Kileleshwa MCA also said politicians eyeing the Nairobi City County Gubernatorial seat, the latest being former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, have no solution to the persistent problems in the devolved unit.

Long term solution
”Regarding the Nairobi governorship, as someone who has now experienced the executive and the assembly and, at least, understands it, I think we are missing the point. I disagree with the President. The problem with Nairobi isn’t a lack of money. It has never been a lack of money. Nairobi generates enough revenue to fund not only its operations but also to loan to other counties within the metropolis,” Alai said.
Robert Alai instead said Nairobi’s main problem is the dominance of political parties, failing to treat the county as the special city it is to the country.
”Nairobi lacks dedicated and visionary leadership. It doesn’t need the panga-wielding, cocaine or even the pouch-tobacco addicts who now manage it. Nairobi needs someone who can visualise the city in the next 100 years, understand its cosmopolitan composition, and recognise that it can’t be treated as an ethnic enclave or trophy that the Luos, Luhyas, Kikuyu, Maasai, or any ethnic community must conquer and dominate at the exclusion of everyone else,” Alai said.

So far, Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, alias Babu Owino, former CS Moses Kuria, among others, have declared interest in unseating Johnson Sakaja as Nairobi Governor in the 2027 general election. However, Alai has said none of them is fit to run the county well.
”Nairobi Governor MUST be someone who can run the United Nations. Must be someone who can sit in the cabinet and provide clarity of vision and policy away from the ethnicised mindset common in our politics.
Moses Kuria, Babu Owino, Johnson Sakaja, etc, are not going to help Sakaja whether you elect them to punish Alai, Ruto, Raila or whoever, he added.
Meanwhile, Robert Alai is among the Nairobi County Members of the County Assembly who have openly called for the impeachment of Johnson Sakaja over reported incompetence at City Hall.
