Affordable Housing is a scam – lawyer Ndegwa Njiru
By Kiprono Keileb, October 30, 2025Human rights Lawyer and advocate Ndegwa Njiru has launched a blistering attack on President William Ruto’s Affordable Housing programme, calling it a scam that risks defrauding Kenyans of their hard-earned money.
Through a statement shared on his X account on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Njiru warned Kenyans against investing in the government’s housing projects, claiming the process of allocating land and issuing ownership titles is flawed.
“Those people being duped by Kasongo to purchase his affordable houses must trade cautiously,” Njiru said, warning that Kenyans stand to lose if they commit funds to the housing project without clarity on land ownership and legal guarantees.

Njiru argued that the government does not have the legal capacity to transfer proper ownership documents to the buyers.
“Kasongo and his government have no capacity to pass a good title to any purchaser,” he stated, suggesting that those who buy into the project could later face ownership disputes.
He further alleged that the state had sidestepped due legal procedures in acquiring land for the housing sites, a move he said could render the projects illegitimate.
“The government has circumvented due process in alienating the public land where those houses stand on,” Njiru added.

The lawyer hinted that a future administration would take firm action to reclaim public property if the ongoing projects were found to have violated land laws.
“Since Wantam is inevitable, in 2027, the first order of business for the next government will be to reclaim and protect public land,” he wrote.
Njiru’s remarks come at a time when the Affordable Housing programme remains a heated national debate, hailed by government supporters as a solution to Kenya’s housing deficit, but criticised by others as a politically driven and legally questionable project.
Njiru’s statement has since sparked conversation online, with many echoing his call for accountability and legal clarity before Kenyans commit their savings to the housing plan.
