The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC)Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee has started investigating an incident in which Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi’s convoy was attacked in Kibra.
The enforcement committee chaired by IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati is currently perusing various reports filed yesterday in relation to the attack which happened on Sunday at Kamukunji grounds in the slum estate while Mudavadi was on a campaign tour in support of his party candidate Eliud Owalo.
IEBC Returning Officer for Kibra, Beatrice Muli, confirmed the enforcement committee has kicked off investigations with a view to taking action against the alleged electoral misconduct.
“Already the matter is being investigated. I presented my report on the incident, and I know the police have also done theirs. I also believe the victims have also made their report,” she told People Daily yesterday at AIC Training Centre in Kibra, where she addressed close to 400 presiding officers and their deputies as final preparations for the high stakes by-election got underway.
At the same time, IEBC has confirmed that 118,658 voters have been listed on the roll after finalising the revision of the Kibra constituency voters’ register.
The electoral body also announced the relocation of 26,788 voters registered in the 36 polling stations.
The announcement contained in the Special Gazette Notice lists Old Kibera Primary School, Ayany Primary School Playing Field and Golf Course Playing Grounds as the relocated polling centres.
The mini poll will be held on November 7. The seat fell vacant in late June when area MP Ken Okoth succumbed to colon cancer.
Muli said the commission is committed to delivering an outcome that is professional and one where all candidates are satisfied with the results.
IEBC’s County Elections Manager Mele Eroo cautioned the selected poll team from engaging with any political parties’ internal affairs. “We are here to serve in a bi-partisan role. As you can see from the onset, this is a high stakes mini poll, and (I) would prefer that we all (remain) neutral,” he said.
