Gor Mahia head coach Leonard Neiva has lauded Rooney Onyango for his adaptability and key contributions to the team’s advancement to the next round of the Champions League.

Onyango, known for his role as a winger with the Harambee Stars national team, was instrumental in Gor Mahia’s recent match.

Gor Mahia coach praise

Neiva praised his ability to seamlessly switch positions during the game, which proved crucial in their 5-2 aggregate victory.

“Rooney really played well. He is a very gifted, quality player who can perform in multiple positions,” Neiva said. “In the first half, he started as a winger but was flexible enough to switch with Paul Ochuoga depending on the game’s demands,” he told Gor Mahia media.

Neiva highlighted a tactical adjustment made in the first half, where Onyango was moved to right back to handle the physical threat of Samuel Akinbinu.

“We needed a stronger presence to manage Akinbinu on the wing, so we moved Rooney to right back. He provided the physicality and strength required for that role.”

Onyango’s versatility was further demonstrated when he was shifted to striker later in the game and scored a crucial goal.

“In the latter part of the game, we asked Rooney to play as a striker, and he responded by scoring. Football requires players to be versatile and unpredictable, and Rooney exemplified that today.”

The Kenyan champions faced an early challenge when they conceded in the sixth minute but rallied to secure the win. Chris Ochieng equalized with a brilliant volley, followed by Onyango’s goal from a pass by Paul Ochuoga. Omija added a third goal with a header from a corner kick.

In the second half, Gor Mahia continued to dominate. Onyango came close to adding another goal but his shot hit the side netting after a precise pass from Austin Odhiambo.

Gor Mahia subs

Neiva made effective substitutions, bringing on Samuel Kapen and Boniface Omondi for Sharif Musa and Chris Ochieng. Kapen’s presence led to another goal by Onyango shortly after his introduction.
