Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has hailed Gen Z for rising up to fight for better governance.

Gen Z were the face of the recent anti-government demonstrations that rocked most parts of the country, and Kibwana, a former presidential advisor under Mwai Kibaki, likened the youth to Kenya’s freedom fighter, Dedan Kimathi.

“New Kenya, nothing less. A land where the citizens and the constitution are sovereign under God. Gen Zs, you sting like bees. You are worthy heirs of Dedan Kimathi, whom you will bury in dignity. Asante. We can smell the third (economic) liberation and Ubuntu,” Kibwana, who served for two terms as Makueni County governor, said in a post on X on Friday, July 12, 2024.

After pressing the president not to assent to the Finance Bill of 2024, Gen Z kept up the pressure until President William Ruto dissolved his cabinet.

To ease the tension that gripped the country and pressured the Kenya Kwanza government, Ruto withdrew the Finance Bill, called for a multi-sectoral engagement with the youth, and also dismissed his cabinet secretaries.

Although firing his cabinet was expected to ease pressure on the president, the Head of State has continued to face criticism.

Amisi’s take

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi said the dissolution of the cabinet is just a sign that President Ruto has failed.

“Why do we say that we, the people, have sovereign power and we only dedicate it? This is the moment we have seen we have power because what the president is doing is basically responding to we, the people. He has not made any genius moves; there is nothing to celebrate about the president sacking his cabinet,” Amisi said.
