Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga was on Saturday, June 8, 2023, caught up in the chaos that erupted inside Central Police Station after police lobbed teargas to disperse him and other human rights activists that had camped at the station.

Mutunga had visited the station accompanied by renowned human rights activist Boniface Mwangi to demand the unconditional release of Saba Saba protesters arrested on Friday, June 7, 2023.

Other activists that accompanied the two are National Commission on Human Rights commissioner Victor Kamau and lawyer Lempaa Soyinka.

“Police have decided to teargas their workplace, and beat some of us. This criminal act was ordered by OCS Central Police Station, Moses Mutayi,” Mwangi wrote on his Twitter account.

“Imagine brutalising, and teargassing peaceful citizens at a police station! Congratulations @WilliamsRuto, and @rigathi @IG_NPS for showing your true colours. Watoto wa Moi ni Moi. Our Constitution is supreme and resistance to dictatorship and impunity is our life duty! KANU 2.0,” he added.

According to multiple reports, one person was injured during the commotion.

Earlier on Friday, June 7, Mutunga had visited the station demanding the release of the activists but his efforts were futile. At the time, he took foodstuff and water for the activists.
