Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has vowed to investigate the situation in which referees failed to show up for the highly anticipated match between Shabana FC and Posta Rangers.

The match, scheduled to take place at Gusii Stadium, was set to mark the first FKF Premier League game at the venue in 18 years.

Shabana-Posta called off

However, it was abruptly called off after reports emerged that the referees refused to officiate, citing security concerns. The officials claimed that the number of security officers provided was insufficient to ensure their safety.

Despite efforts by Shabana’s management to convince the referees to proceed with the game, the officials stood by their decision and did not take to the pitch. As a result, Posta Rangers left the stadium, and the match was officially canceled.

In a statement, FKF acknowledged the situation, confirming that referees had been assigned for the game and were present during the pre-match team meeting but disappeared shortly before kick-off.

“The Football Kenya Federation acknowledges the current situation regarding the match officials assigned to officiate the FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Posta Rangers, scheduled for today at Gusii Stadium. As fans eagerly filled the stadium and both teams took to the field, it has come to our attention that the match officials, who were present during the pre-match team meeting, have unfortunately disappeared prior to kick-off. We understand the frustration and confusion this has caused among fans, players, and club officials alike,” the statement read.

FKF has promised to investigate the matter thoroughly to determine the cause of the officials’ disappearance.

“The FKF is actively investigating this matter and is committed to ensuring that the integrity of the match is upheld. We are currently working diligently to secure alternative match officials to officiate the game. However, we must also consider that if the said officials do not arrive in a timely manner, it may be necessary to reschedule the match to maintain the standards of officiating that our league demands,” FKF added.

FKF assurance

The federation assured all stakeholders that they are prioritizing the issue and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
