A total of 80 families were today rendered homeless in Buoye Village, Kisumu County after flash floods hit the area following two days of heavy rains.

Some families now seeking refuge at nearby churches, while some have moved to higher grounds on the Kisumu-Nairobi highway as they await help from County government of Kisumu and well-wishers.

Rains pounded Kisumu for 24 hours on Wednesday night, but locals believe the situation has been made worse by heavy rains experienced in the neighbouring Nandi County and some parts of Vihiga that caused an overflow of most rivers finding its way to Lake Victoria.

Today river Luanda and Nyamasaria burst its banks and flooded most homesteads. Area MCA Steve Awiti urged residents to be vigilant and move to safer grounds to avoid casualties.
