Foreign missions yesterday told Azimio leader Raila Odinga to seek redress in court over his decision to reject the 2022 presidential election that declared Deputy President William Ruto as President-elect.
In a joint statement, the missions — including Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden Switzerland and the United Kingdom — also told parties to use the existing mechanisms to resolve disputes.
“We encourage all political parties and leaders to follow the existing mechanisms for dispute resolution, as laid out by the Constitution of Kenya,” reads a joint statement.
The embassies and high commissions commended the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for its organisation of the elections.
They also congratulated Kenyans for the peace and calm displayed on election day, besides recognising the positive roles played by civil society, religious and business leaders, and security agencies.
“Kenya has set an example to the region and the continent as a whole. We call upon all actors to uphold the spirit of peace in the coming weekend,” they said.
The statement came on the day Rwandan President Paul Kagame joined other world leaders in congratulating Ruto for winning the election.
Kagame stated that his government attached great importance to the good relationship and co-operation with Kenya.
“On behalf of the Government and People of Rwanda, I congratulate our brothers and sisters, the people of Kenya, for conducting peaceful elections on August 9, 2022. I also congratulate Ruto, the President-elect,” reads a tweet by Kagame on his official twitter account.
On Tuesday, Raila rejected the presidential election results announced by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
whom he accused of acting alone without involving a majority of the commissioners.
