Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has denounced its parliamentarians, all of whom voted in favour of the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to DP national chairman Esau Kioni, the lawmakers who endorsed the impeachment motion in the two Houses – National Assembly and Senate – did it on their individual decisions.

Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku endorsed the impeachment motion at the National Assembly, while Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi supported it at the Senate. The DP has one member of the National Assembly, one Senator and five MCAs.

Right pathway

“Those who voted in Parliament for the impeachment of Gachagua did so on their own accord. Voting in favour of the impeachment motion was not in line with the policies of the Democratic Party. There are many issues facing the country that are of prime importance,” the chairman argued.

He said the party leadership is experiencing problems while trying to disassociate itself from the impeachment that is currently being contested in court. “As the leadership of a party that is allied to the Kenya Kwanza coalition, we are getting backlash from members of the public who claim that we misled them. Kenya Kwanza should change its steps and get back to the right pathway,” said Kioni.
