Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has announced the end of the lecturers’ strike.
The strike had hit its 26th day before the CS said negotiations that had been initiated turned out successful and ended the go-slow.
“I commend the teams involved in the lengthy but successful negotiations that led to the resolution of the 26-day strike by public university lecturers this afternoon.
“Their patriotism and commitment to prioritizing the interests of the nation and the students over personal or institutional differences are truly commendable,” Mutua said in a post on X on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
The former Machakos County governor pointed out players that have been key in negotiations that finally ended the strike.
“I extend my gratitude to my colleague in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Julius Ogamba, PS for Higher Education Beatrice Inyangala, PS for Labour Shadrack Mwadime, and the UASU leadership, led by Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga, for their efforts in reaching this agreement.
“This resolution will now allow our students to resume their studies without further disruption,” he said.
The former government spokesperson said his ministry will maintain an open-door policy in order to address pertinent issues before they escalate.
“As I have emphasized before, it is crucial to identify and address potential issues in collective bargaining agreements early to prevent conflicts that could escalate into strikes.
“My ministry remains committed to maintaining an open-door policy and stands ready to mediate disputes at any time to ensure harmony in the labour sector.
“Mbele iko sawa,” he concluded.
The end of the strike will allow learning to resume normal routine in higher education institutions.
