The Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi has temporarily stopped Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) from terninating the contract of Men’s National Rugby 15s head coach Paul Odera.

KRU on Tuesday, stated on its official site: “The Kenya Rugby Union Board had accepted Paul Odera’s resignation from his role as Head Coach of the Kenya Men’s National Fifteens Team, The Simbas.

The Kenya Rugby Union would like to extend its sincere thanks to Paul for his exemplary service during his time with the Kenya U20s and most recently, the Simbas,” before going forward to wish him well in his future pursuits.

Surprised by the news, Odera, who told People Sport that he had not resigned, moved to court seeking redress on July 28.

Lady Justice Maureen Onyango made six orders among them, that KRU should not publish or cause to publish false and defamatory statements to the effect that Odera had resigned.

She issued an injunction restraining KRU from terminating the claimant’s employment as head coach of the Kenya Simbas without having valid reasons and following due process.

KRU appointed Odera in May 2019 taking over from coach Ian Snook of New Zealand who left the team after the Repechage campaign in France where the Simbas finished bottom and missed out on World Cup qualification.

During his tenure at the job, Odera has had mixed results with the team including back to back victories over Zambia, but his side last month disappointed local rugby enthusiasts after they lost to under dogs Senegal on home soil in a crucial match that could have a lot of implications in the on going rugby world cup qualifying campaign.
