President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, have cancelled their planned visits to Murang’a County.

The two leaders were to attend separate events with President Kenyatta scheduled for a fundraiser at ACK St. Peter Cathedral in Kenol, Maragua while DP Ruto was to be at Githumu in Kandara.

Instead, Cabinet secretaries, Dr Fred Matiang’I, James Macharia and Joe Mucheru, will represent the president.

On the other hand, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka, will represent Dr Ruto in the Githumu event.

Thousands of people had turned up at the ACK St Peter’s Cathedral in Kenol as early as 8:00am eagerly waiting for the President.

Over the past few days, there had been muted debate as to why the two top Jubilee Party leaders should attend two separate occasions in the same county.

Despite the two having officially confirmed their attendance, they cancelled their visit at the last minute.

Bishop Julius Karanu said he received a call from the President on Sunday morning, informing him that he would not be able to grace the occasion as he was expecting some guests.

The bishop said the church was excited in anticipation of hosting the President but said they hope he will still visit them in the future.

“The President, however, promised to get another day to come and worship with us” said Bishop Karanu.
