Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has vowed to lead locals in demonstrating against the leadership of Governor Stephen Sang.

Cherargei in a statement shared via his official social media accounts on Monday, November 11, 2024, stated that the peaceful protests that had been scheduled for November 12 and 13, 2024, will go on despite facing a ban from the police.

The controversial lawmaker argues that the demos are aimed at calling for the removal of Governor Sang from office, by way of impeachment.

Cherargei further argued that the move by police to ban the planned demonstrations undermines the constitutional provision of Article 37 that provides for the right to peacefully demonstrate.

“I have noted with a lot of disdain and Great reservations the move by the Nandi County police purporting to ban tomorrow’s PEACEFUL demonstration in support of removal by impeachment of inept sang and his Moribund CECMs. This undermines the constitutional provision of article 37 that provides for this right to PEACEFUL demonstrate,” Cherargei stated.

Ouster of governor and CECMs

The lawmaker has rallied locals to turn out in large numbers and demand the ouster of Governor Sang, together with his County Executive Committee Members (CECMs).

According to Cherargei, the constitution only requires the police to provide security during peaceful protests, and any attempt by the security agencies to give conditions is illegal, unconstitutional and immoral.

“The law provides that the police shall only be notified to provide security ONLY they DON’T have any iota to give any conditions. This move is illegal, unconstitutional and immoral to say the least coming at the wake of constitution 2010 gains,” Cherargei stated.

Cherargei on adequate security

Cherargei went ahead to maintain that he will be on the streets tomorrow, Tuesday, November 12, with his people, and that he would appeal to the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja that they are given adequate security.

He further warned that the county security team would face legal battles should any security lapses be witnessed during the demos.

“To the Nandi County SECURITY team provide adequate security for peaceful demonstrations any lapses of security there shall be legal consequences. I shall be engaging Inspector General of Police Mr Kanja that we are given adequate security to exercise our constitutional rights,” Cherargei maintained.

Cherargei and Governor Sang have been at odds with the lawmaker accusing the county chief of poor leadership, on several occasions.

In September 2024, operations in several departments at the Nandi County government were paralyzed following a move by Governor Sang to sack hundreds of workers.

In an unprecedented move, Sang declared that the extension of contracts of hundreds of workers and subsequent confirmation of others on permanent and pensionable terms were illegal.
