Catholic bishop calls for honesty ahead of national dialogue

Nakuru Catholic Diocese bishop Cleophas Oseso has called on President William Ruto to ensure that the national dialogue that had been scheduled to kick off today is held under honesty and transparency.

Speaking when he presided over a mass at Christ The King Cathedral, Bishop Oseso said many things happening in the society today require change.

“Today we are told that nine out of ten educated people are unemployed. That is a disaster. We can’t bury our heads and assume everything is okay,” said Oseso.

It is against this background that Bishop Oseso said that he welcomes the dialogue plans which he emphasized should be centered on the people.

“We can’t say we don’t want dialogue. We need it. Let us reason. We need a sincere dialogue. Unfortunately, we are known for dialogues that have never yielded anything fruitful for the ordinary people,” said Oseso.

He noted that similar engagements in the past have only benefited the rich and political elite.

“Let this dialogue be for the good of our society. Let it help that the young people are listened to and helped on issues affecting them,” he said.

He added that the President was now in a position where he should reflect on the journey the country has walked under his leadership and correct the mess that may have been done.

“There has been a lot of pride and self-centeredness among our leaders. That cannot lead us as a nation. This has always been the main evil in our society where leaders forget their duty to the people,” he said.

The Bishop described the current situation as a point of awakening society to the realities happening in and outside government.

“The generation is demanding accountability from the government and protection of human rights that are being violated. We are talking of a generation that was brought up to question things,” said Oseso.
