Kenyans face more pain at the pump as fuel prices soar by Ksh9
By Herald Aloo, June 14, 2022
More pain awaits consumers as pump prices jump further by Sh9 per litre for all the three products amid an economy hurting from high cost of commodities.
The cost of petrol, diesel, and kerosine surged for the fourth successive month as the government gradually pulls the plug on the fuel subsidy that had cushioned Kenyans against volatile prices.
The applicable pump prices for this cycle for super petrol, diesel, and kerosine have been increased by Sh9.00 per litre from the immediate previous cycle.
“The government will utilise the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) to cushion consumers from the otherwise high prices,” Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) said in the latest monthly review.
New fuel prices
New pump prices for Super petrol, diesel, and kerosine will stand at Sh159.12, Sh140.00, and Sh127.94 respectively.
Epra has attributed the new historic levels to hike in the average landed cost of the fuel products and weakening shilling which reached Sh116.89 per dollar, a 0.99 per cent deprecation suffered during the importation phase.
Super Petrol increased by 5.96 per cent from $826.77 (Sh96,641) per cubic metre in April 2022 to $$876.05 (Sh102,401) in May 2022.
In the same period, the landed costs for diesel and kerosine increased by 10.9 per cent and 0.34 per cent, hitting $997.35 (Sh116,580) and $908.66 (Sh105,863) per metre cubic, respectively.
