Kenya completes 400-kilovolt line to Tanzania
Kenya has completed the construction of the 400-kilovolt transmission line with Tanzania, a milestone revealed during the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) Regional Trade Conference 2024 in Mombasa.
The three-day event was organized by EAPP in collaboration with the World Bank to promote regional cooperation in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
Opiyo Wandayi, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, said the newly completed transmission line will allow Tanzania to harness Kenya’s renewable energy capacity while enabling Kenya to use its transmission infrastructure to access Ethiopia’s renewable energy.
Wandayi reiterated the potential of a competitive regional power market, which offers opportunities to enhance energy security through cross-border interconnections and better utilize indigenous energy resources.
Okaasai Opolot, chairperson of the EAPP Council of Ministers and Uganda’s State Minister for Energy, praised the shared infrastructure between member countries.
He noted that this collaboration provides access to low-cost energy and integrates intermittent renewable sources across Eastern Africa.
