Government sets plan for livestock
By Nicholas.Waitathu, July 13, 2023The government is fast-tracking a new legal framework to formalise the marketing of livestock products locally and internationally.
The State Department of Livestock in conjunction with other value chain players has drafted the Livestock Development Bill 2023 that seeks to establish the Livestock Marketing Authority (LMA) among other changes.
Livestock Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke said that LMA would contribute to the commercialisation of livestock and ensure the industry is accorded due attention to the market and make it a commercially viable activity. “The Bill was drafted sometime back and has been subjected to the necessary public participation process. All the primary stakeholders have been consulted and reverted by sharing their views,” he explained.
The Bill is currently at the Attorney General’s office for final drafting and legal scrubbing before it is presented to Parliament,” said Mueke.
