Car dealers importing second hand cars made in 2013 have only 15 days to have their vehicles at the port of entry after which they will be denied entry. 

In a notice, Kenya Bureau of Standards said such cars will be deemed unroadworthy beginning December 31 this year as per the law.

The law requires that second hand cars imported into the country be less than eight years old form the year of first registration.

“Further, the certificate of roadworthiness for vehicles whose first year of first registration is 2013 will not be valid after 31st December 2020. 

All vehicles with such certificates must arrive at the port of destination/entry by December 31 2020,” said Kebs in the notice.

“Any vehicle, registered in 2013 arriving after December 31, 2020 will be deemed not to comply with KS1515:2000 and shall be rejected at the importer’s expense,” it added.

Eight-year limit

In the notice, Kebs said that only Right Hand Drive vehicles whose year of first registration is from January 1, 2014 or later would be allowed into the country beginning January 1 in line with the eight-year limit.

This, according to Kebs, applies to all importers including returning residents, diplomatic staff, and the general public.

It said vehicles imported from countries where Kebs has an inspection agency such as Japan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Thailand, Singapore, and South Africa, should be accompanied by a certificate of roadworthiness issued by the appointed agencies in those countries.
